IlmFest 2011 Houston Pt 2

Shaykh Abdullah Hakim Quick came up and did a talk about the Trusted Sahaba: Abu 'Ubaydah Al-Jarah

Many people might not know this but Abu 'Ubaydah was one of the first Muslims in the time of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He accepted Islam a day after Abu Bakr

Abu Ubaydah had qualities which most of lack these days
1. Body Language: He was tall, thin, polite, modest and soft but strong.
2. Rise over Tribalism: There was an Arabian saying, "Help your brother, whether he is oppressed or is the oppressor". During the Battle of Badr, there was a man following him and wanted to kill him and Abu 'Ubaydah was constantly avoiding him. Abu 'Ubaydah then had no choice but to then kill him. When he was asked about why he was avoiding the man, he said that that man was his father. His nation was Islam and Islam is above any culture.
3. No desire for leadership: Umar ibn Al-Khattab was ready to give bayah (pledge loyalty) to Abu 'Ubaydah to be the Khalifah but he denied that offer because he knew that Abu Bakr was more qualified.
4. A leader that can follow: If a leader doesn't follow, then that leader is no different from Pharoah.
5. Selflessness: He cared about the people before he cared about himself. When a plague hit the people, he had a change to leave but he stayed with his people and caught the disease.
6. Trust: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: Every nation has a trustworthy person and Abu 'Ubaydah was that person.
7. Tolerant: When a christian caravan needed help with property dispute and they asked the Quraish if they could send a pleased person to them. Abu Ubayah was very tolerant to be the judge of the people of the book.

When the Plague struck Abu 'Ubaydah, before he died he gave us advice:
"Do the 5 Pillars, Carry out Yourselves and Unite Yourselves. Be Sincere to our Leaders and do not be Fooled by the Dunya. We are here today and gone tomorrow. Give back to the community because it wont help you in the grave."

"Today, tribalism and nationalism is destroying the unity of the community"

"Every leader should be a follower in some bit"
-Abdullah Hakim Quick

Soon after Maghrib was prayed, Shaykh Omar Suleiman took the stage and talked about: When the Truth Hurts: Women of Paradise.

The Shaykh based his talk on two specific women who were living during the time of Pharaoh. They were the wife of Pharaoh (Asiyah) and the hair dresser of Pharaoh's daughter.

The hair dresser was fixing Pharaoh's daughter's hair one day and she dropped the comb and said, "Bismillah". The daughter of Pharaoh then said, "Allah, are you talking about my father." The hair dresser said, "No, Allah the lord of your father." The daughter of Pharaoh told her father and the hair dresser was ordered to Pharaoh. Pharoah said to her, "Who is your God." She said, "Allah is my Lord." Pharoah said," Who is Allah." She said, "Allah is my God and yours." Pharaoh said, "Bring the chains" and they started torturing her. They tortured and tortured her and found that she wouldn't give up her belief, so he ordered for her 5 kids to be brought to him.  Pharaoh ordered to be a large container of boiling oil and to throw the kids in until she gives up her belief. One by one, he threw all her kids in the oil right in front of her eyes. When she saw her last and youngest child who has a little infant thrown in the boiling oil. She started to cry and asked for a request from Pharaoh. She said, "I been working day and night to provide for my kids, to the point where I barely got to see them. You separated us in this Dunya, don't separate us in the Hereafter. When you burn us all, can you take whats left of our bodies and bury us together in the same grave?" Pharaoh accepted to do that and he threw her into the oil.
It is narrated that Ibn 'Abbas (R) said that the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (SAW) said, "On the night in which i was taken by a night journey, a pleasant fragrance came my way, and so I said, "O Gabriel, What is this pleasant fragrance?" He said, "This is the fragrance of the hairdresser of Pharaoh's daughter, and of the hairdresser's children.""

Asiya was the wife of Pharaoh and also Musa's stepmother. She had everything she could have in this world because she was married to a tyrant. She accepted Islam when she witnessed the miracles of Musa in the court of Pharaoh. When Pharaoh found out about this. She was tortured on a daily basis, and he didn't consider her his wife anymore. Everyday there was a torture session for her and she didn't give up her belief. (Shaykh Omar Suleiman related the two stories with whats going on in Syria. Men are being tortured to say that "Bashar Al Assad is God" and they are crying and saying it. They couldn't handle the pain for just that small moment.) Asiya had this going on for a while and Pharaoh got tired her laughing while she was being tortured and wanted her to die. So he ordered his man to take a boulder to the tallest peak and drop it on her body. Asiya was honored by Allah because he put her Dua at the moment in the Quran (Surah 66, Ayah 11):

And Allah has set forth an example for those who believe, the wife of Fir'aun (Pharaoh), when she said: "My Lord! Build for me a home with You in Paradise, and save me from Fir'aun and his work, and save me from the people who are Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers and disbelievers in Allah.)"

Allah answered both of her prayers and showed her the home that belongs to her in Paradise and her soul was taken away from her before the boulder had struck her.

"He who has noone has Allah"

"Whoever leaves something for Allah, Allah will give them something even better"
-Omar Suleiman
